Solntse continues the tetralogy about power following the films Taurus (2001) and Moloch (1999) by Alexander Sokurov.

The action is set in Japan at the end of 1945. The main character is the Japanese Emperor Hirohito. The film captures the events between the two historical decisions of the royal person which broke with the old-age tradition. The announcement of Japan’s surrender in World War II and the issue of Humanity Declaration where the Emperor denied his divine nature (a descendant of the sun goddess).
